Experience remains essential in manufacturing estimating, but critical costing logic should not live only in one person's memory. A shared framework allows expertise to become part of the process instead of a bottleneck.
Define the estimating sequence
Document the order in which an estimator reviews the RFQ, identifies manufacturing features, selects a process, applies rates, checks outside services, evaluates risk, and approves the quote. A clear sequence reduces skipped steps.
Maintain controlled costing inputs
- Keep material prices current and record their effective dates.
- Define machine and labor rates in one controlled location.
- Use standard setup assumptions with documented exceptions.
- Review scrap, tooling, inspection, and outside-process rules.
Make exceptions explicit
Not every part should follow a default. Tight tolerances, difficult materials, deep features, special tooling, and demanding inspection requirements can change the manufacturing plan. Flag these conditions so the estimator makes a deliberate adjustment.
Compare estimates with actual results
After production, compare estimated material, setup, cycle time, and outside costs with actual performance. Review meaningful differences and update the rule or assumption responsible. This closes the loop between estimating and the shop floor.
Train with real examples
Build a small library of representative parts and approved estimates. Use it when onboarding estimators or changing costing rules. The examples provide a practical benchmark without turning past parts into a substitute for evaluating new geometry.
